DotCalm: Domain Strategies in a Competitive Market By Bradley Epstein Sitting back with a cup of coffee, a young woman has an idea for a new affiliate website. Eager to get started, she goes to 1and1.com to pick up the domain. Alas, it is taken. Suddenly, a second idea pops into her head but she gets the same results. This story, in an age of wide competition int he domain market, is all too common. In this article, we will explore some ways of finding quality unregistered domains that are worthy of your projects. When you search for a .com domain at 1and1.com that is already taken, you are first presented with other extensions for which the name might be available. We will focus on the three most prominent options: .net, .org and .info. Each of these extensions can be a suitable alternative to .com if applied properly. In particular, .net domains are well suitable for tech-related sites, .org fit well with community-based development and .info goes well with travel and review sites. With our August $2.99 .info special, this is a great time to pick up some high-quality .info domains for future development. In some cases, it's best to stick with a .com for large projects and to find alternatives within that extension. First check the plural form of the domain, popular prefixes (i, e, my) and popular suffixes (ster, ly, let) - often times you can find a suitable alternative. Many Web 2.0 sites leave off vowels (e.g. Flickr.com), but make sure this doesn't limit the marketability of your site (think: if someone heard the site on the radio, would the listeners know where to go?) Also, keep in mind adding hyphens between words is a good option to generate SEO friendly domain alternatives to target certain keywords. While the domain market has become more competitive, some creative thinking can result in finding a high-quality domain name for your site. Bradley Epstein is the Campaign Manager at 1&1 Internet. He focuses on targeted online marketing. -- We are always happy to help you better understand our affiliate program and our company. Here are the latest questions that have come up over the past month. Q: Can I promote 1&1 through offline marketing? A: Yes, as long as your referrals use your tracking link or a URL that redirects to your tracking link, you can use creative offline methods to help increase your referrals. Q: When a new special comes
out do I need to replace the banners on my site? Send your own 1&1 affiliate questions and feedback to emarketing@1and1.com |
