Web 2.SEO: Getting and converting quality traffic on your site
By Bradley Epstein

Imagine a consumer swerving through lanes of traffic in a crowded metropolis with countless billboards dotting the landscape, looking to buy a portable music player. Each of the storefront ads calls out price specials and features, with bright colors and exclamation points. As the consumer approaches the center of the city, he sees a store with a clean storefront ad, a well-structured layout insight and well-lit street side parking. In a maze of noise, the store represents an oasis of simplicity. The driver pulls into a parking spot, locates the MP3 player with help of a good in-store guide and leaves happy, with the crisp sounds of new music playing in the background. This is the brick-and-mortar version of Web 2.SEO, and this article will introduce you to ideas how to find these web drivers and convert them into customers with organic SEO and Web 2.0 design techniques.
The term “Web 2.0” originated from observations about the set of web companies that not only survived, but thrived, in the wake of the “dot com” crash in the fall of 2001. At the core of these sites were simple yet compelling designs with well-chosen visuals, and interactive tools that let users interact and construct content in unique ways. In addition to creating useful sites, the principles behind 2.0 can be used to increase organic traffic to your site, retain visitors and convert those visitors to customers, hence Web 2.SEO.
Incorporating a well-structured Web 2.0 design into your site will improve search rankings through both improving the informational architecture of your site (cleaner, simpler code makes your site more easily indexed) and also improves the probability that high-quality sites will link to you. A simpler, more streamlined design will make your site easier to read for engines and users as well. As search algorithms evolve with advances in natural language processing and artificial intelligence we are seeing a “coincidence of search wants”: more and more, search engines rank sites as web surfers would by paying attention to the quality of the informational architecture. Now, more than ever, you can please both bots and visitors by keeping Web 2.SEO principles in mind when designing your site – and, most importantly, focusing on these principles will benefit your bottom line and help you bring in more affiliate commissions from 1&1. The 3 principles of Web 2.SEO are as follows:

Getting visitors
Use a 2.0 structure to improve readability

With limited space on a site, especially above the fold, you should aim to maximize the effectiveness of the visual communication: each graphical element should convey a message, and the textual content should be concise. The more logically organized your site is, the easier for both
search bots and web visitors to find relevant information.
A simpler 2 or 3-column, central layout structure will be able to convey a simpler, bolder message that communicates more clearly with your visitors. The central column is the ideal place to place your central message, with highly targeted original text. Make sure to use your top header section to clearly present your site and navigation options to draw in your visitors with a bold, opening statement on what they can find on your site.
Keep your navigation simple: this will create a logical structure for your visitors, and translate well into a clean sitemap which search engines can use to index your site. Use the sitemap tool in the Google® Webmaster Tools found in your control panel to help you create a sitemap for the engines, and also to visualize the structure of your site. When constructed properly, both the sitemap and navigation layout should be logical and clear.

Generating a community
Use 2.0 applications for community content building

Once your site has been indexed, and has a clean structure you want to make sure to build community tools to earn return visits and generate original content to further improve your search rankings. The most readily available tool that generates high SEO rankings are blogs – you can use the 1&1 Blog creator tool to create a blog or add one to your existing site (comments, if well moderated, can also provide another means of original, user-generated content for your site.) With the new 1&1 Click ‘n Build tool, you can install a wide variety of community-driven applications such as PhpBB for forums, dynamic applications with Xoops, Tikiwiki to create your own customized Wiki site. Each of these features provides value to your visitors, can increase return-visitor traffic and also can improve the original content on your site for search engine indexing.

From visitors to customers:
Use 2.0 designs to improve conversions

A crisp, clean layout will make a strong first impression to your visitors, and establish
a level of trust. Starting with a bold logo for your site, you can immediately convey the basic message of your site, whether it’s a blog, review site, landing page or any other type of website. Another key way to convey the message of your site is with a dynamic photo – a large selection of quality stock photos is available through the Fotolia link on the right sidebar of your 1&1 Control Panel. Paying close attention to building a bold logo, adding eye-catching photos that fit into your central message and trying it together with a smooth color scheme - keep in mind that different colors convey different messages to your visitors.

Using the basic principles of Web 2.0 design and organic SEO can produce a Web 2.SEO website that can both increase your search ranking, visitor traffic and conversion of visitors to affiliate sales. At 1&1, we’re working hard to provide you with the most up-to-date tools and advanced commission to make your affiliate sites a success.

How the New Media Explosion Can Make You a Better 1&1 Affiliate

By Paul Colligan

There is no denying the impact of new media today. From Podcasting to YouTube to Joost to Video Blogs to television on the XBox, more and more people are jumping on the new media bandwagon. In the past month, the iPhone was released, Apple TV began streaming YouTube content and thousands of new first-time Podcasters will submit their show to iTunes.

There are exciting times...and this should be music to the ears of any 1&1 affiliate.

New media is a bandwidth hog: some video blogs and podcasts can do more than a terabyte of data transfer in a single month. Some hosts promising "unlimited bandwidth" have popped up but the promise has yet to materialize into the reliable hosing platform we've come to know and love at 1&1.

And if there is anything the aspiring new media producer wants -- it's reliability. Think about it: they're going to face a 24x7 audience.

Are you getting the idea yet?

Several times a month I speak with aspiring new media titans who are "afraid" of high bandwidth bills. Between you and me, 99 times out of a hundred, they have nothing to worry about but for those who need an answer I have this one:

"What would you say if I told you that you could get more than a terabyte of bandwidth transfer for less than ten bucks a month?" The truth is, with 1&1, it's less than five. For ten, you can get more than twice that much. It hooks them in. And I close the sale. And I collect those very generous commissions from 1&1. the best part is I handle no tech support and direct anyone with questions to 1&1's 24/7 support line. I, of course, make sure they're cookied first.

And people ask me why I love new media. ;-)
