The Connection between Domains and a First Class Marketing Strategy By now most professionals and journalist have released their year-end reviews and predictions for the upcoming months. Having the opportunity to review such articles as those run on DNJournal.com, DomainNameWire.com and Sedo.com, 2007 is expected to bring increased growth and recognition to the domain industry. Statistics show the primary domain market (new registrations) and secondary market saw phenomenal growth in 2006. Tim Schumacher of Sedo noted “2006 was certainly a very exciting year for the domain name business. We saw a strong boom in all areas including registration, PPC/parking, buying and selling, but the fire was definitely fueled by the secondary market.” While 1&1 continued to be a leader in hosting and primary registrations, contributing to the number of registered domains soaring passed 100 million, the secondary domain market experienced record sales as well. Business owners and investors have been picking up hot domains including Wifi.com for $225,000 and CheapGifts.com for $90,000. Noise was made when Vodka.com changed hands for $3 million to Russian Standard. Businesses and affiliate marketers are only beginning to realize the benefit of integrating domains into their global marketing strategy. Domains provide an easy way to drive targeted campaigns online, to increase brand awareness and strengthen industry presence. Russian Standard (Vodka.com) and buyers of more modest domains sales including Yellow.info (2,750 USD), WebHoster.info (4,000 EUR) and WebBuilder.co.uk (4,700 GBP) are including domains in their marketing strategy. They see domains as a way to drive natural qualified traffic to their websites. Christian Kalled, Director of North American Brokerage for Sedo.com, remarked “it is clear that brand holders and brand builders will continue to explore and invest in the domain industry because they have discovered, along with the rest of us, that domains are inextricably tied to search, and that search is a highly effective vehicle for successful marketing. What’s more, it is the ONLY advertising channel that is truly global in scope.” More and more internet users are arriving at websites through direct navigation (directly typing a domain name into their web browser) as opposed to first using a search engine. Research from WebSideStory Inc’s StatMarket division, a web analytics company, noted that greater than two-thirds of users arrive at a website via direct navigation. With such an astonishing number it’s no wonder businesses are looking for ways to catch traffic to drive to their site. Companies can be seen investing in many variations of their company name, including a diverse array of extensions (.com, .us, .net etc) misspellings and descriptive terms. Fortune 500 company Barnes and Noble built a portfolio of domains directing them to their brand domain barnesandnoble.com. Their portfolio includes:
In addition to direct navigation owning the right domains (a diversified domain portfolio) has also proven lucrative for both search engine optimization and search engine marketing. Using a descriptive domain name often influences SE ranking. Domains are proving their effectiveness by increasing click through rates associated with search marketing campaigns. For companies interested in driving quality traffic to their site, using a targeted and descriptive domain in their search market efforts has been known to increase click-through rate and conversions. This works especially well for newer companies and affiliate advertisers with a goal to drive a lot of qualified traffic to their website. With Yahoo! moving in the direction of Google Adwords and basing their cost per click on keyword and ad performance, having a higher click-through-rate could mean lower costs per click in your search marketing efforts. While many companies are only beginning to see the advantages of domains, investors have been active on the secondary domain market for over 15 years. Many own diverse portfolios of hundreds and even thousands of domains and put them to work earning revenue through affiliate programs and/or partnering with domain parking programs such as Sedo to monetize the traffic of their unused domains (For a tour of domain parking visit: SedoParking.com). Investors and businesses are constantly diversifying their domain portfolios, buying and selling domains on the secondary market. Great domains now for sale include hostmaster.com, hosting24.com and domains123.com. Over 6 million more quality domains listed for sale by owner can be found at Sedo.com. The number of monthly visitors and domain’s page rank are included on many listing pages. With domains for any budget and industry, companies small and large
are taking advantage of the power of domains and catching more
traffic (watching their traffic soar). Building a domain portfolio
of generic,
descriptive, and abbreviated terms is the easiest way to get
your affiliate program or new business off the ground. |
