Editor's Note from 1&1 Online Marketing Director, Joshua Sloan: The topic of buying links is a controversial one, with opinions on both sides of the fence, for the moment I will stay in the middle. Because we often get questions about it, this month's tips from TextLinkBrokers.com may help you know how to go about it in the right way. As of right now, Google's engineer Matt Cutts says, "“The best links are not paid <snip>–the best links are earned and given by choice.” Our September newsletter offers some guidance about the best ways to organically build incoming links to your site. Another informative source is www.linkbuildingwiki.com Matt expounds further that: "Reputable sites that sell links won’t
have their search engine rankings or PageRank penalized–a search
for [daily cal] would still return dailycal.org. However, link-selling
sites can lose their ability to give reputation (e.g. PageRank and
anchortext)" Notice
he says 'can', not 'will', I guess Google is the final arbitrator. According to Google anyway, buying links should done for traffic building or for buzz, not for SEO (search engine optimization). Various link brokers might disagree. Do other engines follow the same policy/algorithm as Google? Unlikely, but be cautious and smart about buying links. Purchased links can indeed build traffic to your site, and even sales, if the sites linking to you are sending good quality visitors who are interested in what your site has to offer. Caveat emptor - buyer beware. Everything works, but not equally well for every site. Sometimes a purchased link can help search rankings, sometimes not. Results will certainly vary. A marketer's mantra is TEST, TEST, TEST... Text Links, Search Engine Traffic and Affiliate Revenue How Do Text Links Help Me Rank Higher In The Search Engines? Link popularity is the most significant factor that Google and other search engines use to evaluate and rank your site based on its keywords. There are a number of different link popularity elements including the quantity, quality and relevance of inbound links pointing to your site. Getting text links from popular sites will increase your link popularity, and will definitely help boost your site’s organic search rankings and increase your traffic and sales. Over the past few years, the search engines began placing additional value on links coming from relevant sites. It is important to obtain category relevant links. For example, a web host site does well with links from other web hosts, domain sites, web development sites and others that would naturally link to a web host site. If you sell dog food, you will want to find links from hobby, pet, and dog sites. How Long Does It Take the Links to Improve My Site’s Rankings? The newest significant factor that the search engines use to rank and to determine how much value to assign a link is “Link Age”. The longer your links are up the more valuable they become. Links that go up and then go down quickly are a sign of unnatural link practices. Whether you get your links organically or through a paid broker, the longer the link points to you from a quality site, the better! Link Buying Tips #1 – Only Buy Links on Sites Relevant To Yours Do your homework. We suggest spending time in our inventory searching for keywords that you know are relevant to your industry first and then start searching through the various relevant categories. After all, how relevant could a link from a technology site be if your site sells dog food... #2 – Use Your Primary Keywords in the Anchor Text of Your Links The anchor text, also known as link text, is the actual text used in the links that point to your site. Include your primary keywords in the link anchor text pointing back to your site. The search engines look at the link text of your incoming links to help determine what your site offers (i.e. content). Optimize the anchor text of your links and you will definitely see an impact on your rankings. Note, do not overuse the same link text and keywords. Your links will look unnatural if they all have the same anchor text. #3 – Leave Your Links Up Long Enough for Them to Achieve and Maintain Your Rankings Natural links tend to stay up over a long time or permanently. The longer a site links to you, the better chance that the link could help you in the search engines. #4 – Track Your Keyword Rankings by Using Search Engine Ranking Software There are many commercially available tools, or if you are lucky enough to have 1&1 as your host, they even provide and EasySEO tool in the '1&1 Marketing Center' that can help you track your organic ranking for your primary keywords. A qualified text link broker can help guide you to the best sites that can generate good traffic and increase your incoming links. Ready to try link buying?
